More than twenty-five years ago, entirely analog, and this still puts the entire so-called ‘dance industry’ to shame. I remember when I got my first imported Yellow Magic Orchestra album in the late seventies (unusually thick vinyl on a label called ‘Alfa’, I believe) and started playing it on the radio (I was a local radio dj at the time) and at drive-in shows .. it had a huge impact on everyone.
Together with Kraftwerk, it was the perfect bridge between disco and the upcoming electronic body music, house music, and techno music in general. I have always felt that YMO’s influence was heavily underrated when compared to Kraftwerk.
The first song below, Technopolis, invariably brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it, simply because it takes me right back to an era when all that mattered to me was finding new and interesting records to play on the radio, and boy .. this was new and interesting! The impact it had on other, likeminded people was a kind of a Goatse effect: “What the hell is this?!” .. but in a good way, of course ..
YMO – Technopolis
YMO – Firecracker
Loads of YMO clips can be found here. Enjoy!
